While fibre is used and loved in most places across Aotearoa, there are still a few places that don't. However, if you are a rural household and are finding that VDSL isn’t cutting it in terms of speed and capability, consider switching to fibre. Remember, there is a reason that society as a whole has moved on from copper to fibre!
When you switch to fibre, you’ll wish you’d done it sooner. With incredibly fast speeds, perfect for video streaming, gaming, video calling and more!
We have created this guide to help you have a better understanding of the process of getting fibre installed, so you can enjoy its amazing benefits.
These are the steps in the process.
You’ll want to choose a fibre plan. Jump on Broadband Compare to compare different fibre plans based on your unique requirements and budget. Consider trying our broadband speed calculator to figure out what speed would be best for your household. Our interactive speed calculator helps determine the right speed for you based on your internet activities such as streaming and gaming, and how many devices you have. This is a good idea because there are different fibre speeds on the market, and you want to make sure you have the right speed, and not pay for more than you need. Once you know what speed is best, you can compare fibre plans available to you, and choose the right one that suits your needs and budget.
To get fibre connected to your home, you’ll need to have a discussion with your local fibre company. This will not be the internet provider from which you purchase your fibre plan. This will be a company that owns and operates the actual fibre network – the fibre optic cables – under the road. In most instances, this company is Chorus.
Chorus has connected tens of thousands of Kiwis homes and businesses to their fibre network. Your internet provider will instruct the local fibre company to contact you. Once you have purchased your fibre plan, the fibre network representative will contact you about the next steps to get the fibre installed and connected. Bear in mind, if you live in a right of way, an apartment building, or if your business is part of a shared premise, you’ll need to also get consent from the neighbours, landlord, or body corporate before getting the connection.
For this step of the process, you will need to be present at your address to discuss the installation with the fibre network provider. They will book a time with you to meet to discuss the steps to getting fibre installed, including how they will get the fibre from the road, to your property and the installation of equipment in your home or business. Whatever steps they outline, you will need to agree before they can commence with the installation.
For this step in the process, you don’t need to be present at the property. The fibre technicians won’t need access to your property for this part. They will install fibre cables from the street to the outside of your property as per what you agreed to. It’s a good idea to have your phone handy in case they need to contact you to make changes to the plan, if need be. They may also need more than one day to complete this step.
This step can take up to four hours and you’ll need to be present at the property. As the final step in the installation process, the technician will complete the internal wiring and installation of the new technology inside your property to get you connected.
The technician will do a final test to make sure the fibre works and that you are good to go. They’ll make sure you’re happy with it before cleaning up, and leaving you to enjoy your brand-new super speedy internet!
