Spark Internet

News and information from Spark Broadband

Now you may have read the news on BroadbandCompare NZ back in January that broadband plan prices were going up and we recommended comparing broadband plans in New Zealand. Well whilst we still very much live by that philosophy, credit where it is due to Spark Broadband.

In January Spark Broadband Price increases were announced as a result of the Commerce Commission announcing a significant increase in the amount that internet providers in NZ pay to Chorus (the network provider) to connect consumer broadband and business broadband in New Zealand to the historic copper telecom network.

What Spark Broadband also announced at the time was that they would review pricing and consider a credit or something for Spark Broadband customers because the price changes weren’t backdated as the NZ Broadband companies thought they might be. This was the reason that in February of 2015 Spark Broadband increased some prices to customers still being served by the copper network on Spark ADSL or Spark Broadband VDSL. Anyway… as the price increase wasn’t backdated Spark made a promise which they are keeping and if you are currently a Spark broadband customer there will be a pleasant surprise in your March bill. What sort of surprise? Well it is a nice one and pretty big news for Spark Broadband customers. Some free money by all accounts and it won’t do their Spark broadband reviews any harm at all I’m sure 🙂

Spark Internet Price News

Spark Broadband has announced it will return the money that it took by raising prices in 2015 following the decision to not backdate the higher Chorus lines charges from the Commerce Commission which was decided in January 2016. Not all Spark Broadband Plans will qualify for the refund as not all Spark broadband plans had the price hike applied in 2015. The savings will be given to eligible Spark broadband home plans and Spark Broadband business customers on affected Spark broadband and landline-only plans. Basically not to Spark Fibre Broadband customers.

Spark Broadband says Spark Home broadband customers will be able to go online to claim their savings as a $33 account credit on their monthly bill or put it towards a six months’ data upgrade to their Spark broadband plan (Moving your plan to a Spark unlimited data plan and worth from $60) or if feeling generous Spark customers can make a $33 donation to a cause of their choice on Givealittle. If you are simply a Spark ome landline-only customer then you receive a $33 account credit.

The maths has been crunched by the accounts boffins at Spark and the $33 equates to the net savings to Spark from the Commerce Commission decision. As you would imagine the guys at Spark Broadband are very happy to announce this news and it will be a big chunk of money they are paying back to their Spark Broadband customers. Let’s hear from the CEO of Spark Home, Mobile and Business, Mr Jason Paris…

“Spark Broadband put up our prices in February last year after the Commerce Commission threatened to backdate higher Chorus charges from the previous December, at the time, we said that if there was no backdating, we would do the right thing and return savings where we could to our customers,” he says.

“While most broadband retailers increased their prices around the same time, to our knowledge we are the only NZ Broadband retailer who is now giving back to customers,” Paris adds.
“In recent weeks, Chorus and other industry players have confirmed they will not appeal the Commerce Commission’s final decision, and this certainty now means we can follow through on our commitment to return savings to our customers,” says Paris.
“We’re really pleased we can offer Spark broadband customers a range of choices in how they get their savings and it will only take a few quick minutes to go online and make their selection,”
he adds.

Three cheers to Spark Broadband….

BUT…

Even when you apply the $33 savings from Spark Broadband to your account, with two price increases in the last 15 months – admittedly mostly as a result of circumstances outside of their control – Spark Broadband may still not be the best choice for your particular Broadband needs. Maybe you need to check out some Spark Broadband Reviews or you are not happy with the spark broadband speed?

Record demand for ultrafast broadband connections in NZ

Ultrafast Broadband Connection NZ

Record demand for new connections means shortage of technicians

It’s all go with the Ultrafast Broadband Network (UFB Network) in New Zealand. Since Christmas 2015 there has been a record upsurge in demand for Ultrafast broadband (UFB Network NZ) connections which means more work for Chorus and other technicians and a shortage of experienced technicians to do all the work… so what does this mean for you the New Zealand consumer?

Well, putting it bluntly you need to be sure you compare internet providers NZ and make sure that get the best broadband plan in NZ becuase it is going to be getting slower to switch so make sure that you compare broadband providers in NZ before you make a change…

Speaking at the start of February 2016 after the release of a report on the status of the industry from the Telecommunications Forum. The Chorus chief executive Mark Ratcliffe said that both January 2016 and February 2016 had seen a record number of new fibre broadband NZ connections and his company, which is responsible for the vast majority of the Ultra Fast Broadband network rollout (UFB) across New Zealand, has had to boost its technician capacity by 30 per cent in the past four months as more people are comparing broadband plans to make sure that they get the best fibre broadband deals in NZ.

The government contracted four companies to meet their objective of rolling out the Ultra Fast Broadband (UFB network) network to 80 per cent of NZ by 2022. In the first month of 2016, Chorus received more than 13,000 new fibre connection orders in January, the highest yet in any one month, and it’s currently completing an average 400 new connections a day…which at that run rate means almost 150,000 NZ consumers will try and find the best broadband plans in NZ in 2016.

With all that in mind it is no surprise that Chorus chief executive Mark Ratcliffe said “We need, collectively, twice as many technicians that we have working by the middle of the year, it’s that kind of magnitude” – here at Broadband Compare we are over the moon that that many kiwis are looking to take advantage of the awesome ultra fast fibre network and compare the best broadband packages in New Zealand!

Down in Christchurch the fibre company in charge of the ultra fast broadband fibre network rollout there is called Enable and they are reporting a similar upsurge in demand with connections doubling in the past three months – which is incredible growth. The Enable chief executive Steve Fuller said its projections had been for the demand to peak in 2018/19 but “we’re now hitting that peak three years early” – isn’t that amazing! Kiwis are on the hunt for the best broadband plans because they are also taking to online video streaming and music streaming services that benefit from the quicker speeds that ultrafast fibre broadband inn NZ can offer.

The Spark chief executive Simon Moutter said that fibre broadband was an “easy sell” but there needs to be a greater understanding with consumers on the process of getting connected. More education for consumers on what will happen at their home with fibre installations need to happen so that when they have finished comparing broadband plans in NZ they know the timeline for getting connected as fibre broadband becomes more mainstream.

Chorus has now said that they have taken a number of steps to improve that experience as the demand for fibre increases and Vodafone New Zealand chief executive Russell Stanners said consumers need to change what they have as expectations for fibre broadband connecting. There are currently unrealistic expectations around how quick the fibre broadband connection will be made, when they wouldn’t expect other work around the home such as a bathroom renovation to be done “the day they think of it”… so like we said at the start of this article, if you are looking at a broadband providers comparison in NZ then make sure you make an informed decision on who is the best broadband provider.

If you are looking to join the ultrafast fibre revolution then we recommend MyRepublic – they are specifically a fibre broadband provider and you can check if your home has fibre broadband availability on their NZ fibre broadband checker which you can find here – NZ Fibre Broadband Checker

Compare Broadband Plans – beat the 2016 price hike!

So… did your Broadband Bill increase yet in 2016?

Compare Internet Providers and Compare Broadband Plans in NZ with Broadband Compare and you might be able to save a healthy chunk on one of your major household bills.

With an announcement from the Commerce Commission in the middle of December 2015 about what other telecom companies and broadband internet providers in NZ should pay to Chorus for access to their copper line network you might just be seeing a price hike in your current broadband plan bill!

Here at Broadband Compare NZ we are all about making life easier for consumers and businesses to understand and compare broadband plans and internet providers in NZ… we also like to decipher and translate big government decisions like this one from the Commerce Commission into language that everyone can understand… So… what does this mean to the kiwi consumer and broadband plans in New Zealand?

In summary… your broadband bill will very likely see a increase. Not a huge monthly increase but with Chorus being able to charge Spark Broadband, Compass Broadband, Vodafone Broadband and many other internet providers in NZ an additional $7.11 per month to send their broadband connection down the Chorus copper pipes you can be pretty sure that some or all of that cost will be passed on to the end bill payer… i.e. you… the New Zealand Broadband user.

According to Chorus, the Copper network access price increase will mean that they will be able to bill an incredible, $120 million a year to the broadband providers in NZ, over 5 years that is $600 million extra… the bulk of which YOU will pay for.

So… surely there has never been a better time to compare broadband plans and compare internet providers in NZ and switch your broadband provider?

Internet NZ, has called the broadband price decision a travesty and has pointed out that New Zealand is the only country in the world putting up copper pricing for broadband plans. New Zealanders pay more for fixed broadband plans than most developed countries and independent research (from the International Telecommunications Union) which compares internet plans and broadband prices put us in the 60th place in the world… even over the ditch in Australia they are twenty places ahead of New Zealand. This broadband plan price increase for copper connections will push us even further down the rankings as the NZ broadband providers will have to put their prices up.

There are 1.33 million copper internet connections in New Zealand. This is an increase of one percent from 2014 according to Stats NZ when they surveyed internet providers in NZ.

Ultrafast Fiber Broadband or Fibre connections have more than doubled from 46,000 in 2014 to 105,000 at the end of 2015 but they still only make up about five per cent of all broadband connections in New Zealand. Even Spark, one of the old guard of internet providers in New Zealand said that when you compare internet plans in New Zealand they their customers will now pay more for access to the ADSL copper broadband network than they do for entry-level plans on Ultrafast Broadband (UFB) fibre.

If you are a Spark Broadband customer, a Compass Broadband customer or a Vodafone Broadband customer on a residential fixed line service you will more than likely be seeing an increase on your ADSL or VDSL connections by around $5 a month from February or March 2016. Interestingly and correctly, prices are unchanged for landline only customers and also for fibre broadband customers, including Ultrafast Broadband users.

So… you’ve read enough? $5 a month for a year is $60. For two years that’s $120 – that’s a chunk of change I would rather have in my pocket.

Many of the broadband providers in New Zealand offer great incentives for new customers. Switching is a simple and easy process and sometimes your new bill and the incentive will save you even more than the early exit fee that you may have to pay if under contract.
